The Tcl Developer Xchange, maintainer of the open-source Tcl and Tk programming languages, has released version 9.1.0 as a development milestone building toward a planned stable release. The build extends the foundation laid by Tcl/Tk 9.0 with a range of new commands, interfaces, and internal improvements for developers using the languages.
On the Tcl side, the release introduces a new unicode command and accompanying C routines for Unicode normalization, along with a high-resolution timer command offering microsecond precision via a monotonic clock. Other additions include lfilter for selecting items from lists, an interp set mechanism for variable access within child interpreters, and new options for the subst and switch commands. The release also exposes many C99 math routines as expr functions and requires applications to call an initialization routine — either Tcl_FindExecutable or TclZipfs_AppHook — a change developers will need to account for when upgrading.
Additional under-the-hood work includes new C routines for hash table handling, list manipulation, and encoding lookups, as well as a revised time API that uses long long values in place of the older Tcl_Time structure. The update also brings case-insensitive filesystem path handling on macOS, reforms to auto_execok and executable searches on Windows, and memory-efficiency improvements for handling large lists.
On the Tk side, the toolkit gains initial accessibility support through screen readers and early handling of bidirectional and right-to-left text, both aimed at broadening the toolkit's usability for a wider range of users and languages. A new ttk::toggleswitch widget and a tk attribtable command are included, alongside a revised and improved send command on Aqua (macOS). Other interface refinements cover negative screen distance handling, expanded state support in ttk::treeview and ttk::notebook, rotated text on labels, and improved listbox selection colors. Support for Windows XP-era appearances has been removed.
Source releases for Tcl/Tk 9.1.0 are available for download from the Tcl Developer Xchange site, www.tcl-lang.org, which serves as the main hub for Tcl and Tk software, core development activity, documentation, and community resources.
The release notes describe 9.1.0 as ongoing development work rather than a finished stable build, and the project has not published additional context beyond the changelog itself. As with any pre-stable release, developers relying on Tcl/Tk in production should review the initialization and API changes carefully before adopting it.
