The Swiss Federal Council wants to add child protection measures to its planned law on communication platforms and search engines. It decided this at its meeting in Berne on 14 October 2026.
The Council took note of the results of the consultation process. A consultation is a stage where the government collects feedback on a draft from interested groups and the public before moving ahead.
It has told the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) to prepare a dispatch by the end of 2027. A dispatch is the formal proposal the government sends to Parliament.
The preliminary draft is to be changed to include measures to protect children. The source text does not say what those measures will be.
The Council also wants the reporting procedure extended to cover all content suspected of being unlawful. The available text does not describe how the procedure works now or how it would change in practice.
The consultation on the new law started with a press release dated 29 October 2025. The full text of the latest announcement is available in German, French and Italian.
A headline circulating with this story suggested Switzerland proposes banning profiling-based ads to minors.
