StreetComplete iOS Port Reaches Public TestFlight Beta

The popular OpenStreetMap survey app StreetComplete, long available on Android, is now testable on iOS via TestFlight as developers consolidate work under a new master GitHub ticket.

StreetComplete, the beginner-friendly app that lets anyone contribute map data to OpenStreetMap by answering simple on-the-ground questions, is now available for testing on iOS through Apple's TestFlight platform, according to the project's GitHub page and release materials.

The move follows years of development work aimed at bringing the Android-only app to iOS. Project maintainers have opened a new GitHub ticket to serve as a coordination hub for the iOS port, replacing an earlier ticket, #1892, which had accumulated extensive discussion, research and field observation from contributors. Developers point to slides from a talk at State of the Map Europe 2024, now annotated with speaker notes, as a resource for understanding the technical path to iOS.

StreetComplete works by scanning a user's surroundings for places where OpenStreetMap data is incomplete or outdated, then surfacing those spots as "quests" on an in-app map. A user might tap a quest marker and be asked something like "What is the name of this road?" and answer directly in a text field. Those answers are processed automatically and uploaded to OpenStreetMap under the user's own account, organized into meaningful changesets. Because the app is designed for use while out surveying, it works offline and is frugal with data.

The app requires no prior knowledge of OpenStreetMap's tagging conventions, which has made it a popular entry point for casual contributors who want to improve map accuracy without learning specialized editing tools. On Android, it is available through Google Play, F-Droid and as a direct APK download from GitHub.

Funding for the iOS effort has come from multiple sources over the years. The NLnet Foundation, using European Commission funds, has issued four grants to the project since 2019, including one in 2025 specifically earmarked to help developer Tobias Zwick finish migrating StreetComplete to a multiplatform codebase that runs on iOS. Earlier NLnet grants supported features such as overlays and augmented-reality measuring tools. Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research also funded iOS-focused work on the app through the Prototype Fund between March and August 2024. The project additionally receives ongoing community support via GitHub Sponsors, Liberapay and Patreon, and its background map tiles are provided free by JawgMaps.

As an open-source project, StreetComplete's maintainers continue to invite outside contributions, from bug testing and translation to resolving user-submitted notes and suggesting or building new quest types.

Some specifics of the iOS rollout, including a firm public release timeline, were not fully detailed in the available source material and should be confirmed against the project's GitHub tracker before being treated as final.
