The Linux-based mobile operating system previously known as postmarketOS has a new name: Nura. The change was announced during a mystery talk at the project's own conference, capping an 18-month selection process.

Nura is derived from "Nuraghe," the name given to ancient stone tower structures found across Sardinia, Italy, some dating back to 3000 BC or earlier. Many of these structures remain standing today, and the project's team said the name reflects the durability and longevity they want their software to embody. The idea, they said, has always been to keep devices running the OS useful for as long as possible, with a stated goal of a ten-year life-cycle for supported smartphones, a claim that should be verified against the project's own documentation.

The name Nura was submitted by community member Davide Depau in response to the project's open call for naming suggestions.

In explaining the rebrand, the team said the postmarketOS name had become an obstacle to outreach. It was long, awkward to pronounce in many languages, and consequently difficult for non-English speakers to remember. Its capitalization was also inconsistent, with a lowercase "p" and "m" alongside an uppercase "OS," leading to a scattering of inconsistent spellings such as "PostMarketOS" and "post-market OS" that confused both readers and writers.

The team also noted that the old name was overly descriptive, which limited how the project could present itself. That became a practical problem, they said, pointing to PINE64's decision to sell PinePhones with postmarketOS pre-installed as an example of the project outgrowing the boundaries implied by its own name. A descriptive name also cannot be trademarked, and the team said they see trademark protection as important for defending users against fraudulent or misaligned uses of the project's identity. A trademark application for Nura has reportedly already been filed, though this has not been independently confirmed.

The rebrand announcement originated from a Hacker News-linked source with limited extractable detail, and some specifics—including exact dates, attendance figures, and the full text of the announcement—could not be independently verified at the time of writing.
