PhreshOS Offers an Open-Source Desktop for Running Web-Based Apps Locally

PhreshOS is a new open-source system that runs on your own machine and gives you a browser-based desktop for apps built with standard web technology, handling sign-in, storage and permissions so developers only write app logic.

A new open-source project called PhreshOS is positioning itself as an operating system for software built with web technologies, surfaced this week via a Show HN post on Hacker News from its developer, PhreshOS.

The system installs and runs on a user's own machine, keeping programs active in the background while presenting a desktop interface accessible through any web browser that can reach that machine. According to the project's documentation, programs are built using familiar web development tools, while PhreshOS itself handles the underlying infrastructure: each program gets a dedicated place to run, a single sign-in shared across all programs, communication channels between programs, storage, and a permissions system. The aim is that individual programs need only contain their own application logic rather than reimplementing these common services.

Even core desktop elements, such as the file manager, settings panel, and wallpaper, are described as programs built on top of the PhreshOS system rather than features baked into it, underscoring the project's modular design.

Among the features highlighted by the developers: programs keep running on the host machine whether or not a browser window is open; the owner authenticates once with the system, so individual programs never need to manage accounts or sessions; programs can communicate with each other without needing to build their own networking; and the system centrally governs what each program is permitted to access. The developers also note that the same desktop and programs can be reached from any browser that can connect to the machine, and that AI agents can interact with the same programs simultaneously, using a command-line tool called phresh and accompanying software development kits.

People can try PhreshOS through a live demo that offers a temporary, one-hour desktop with nothing to install. Installing it permanently requires Node.js version 24.15 or newer on macOS, Linux, or Windows, via the command "npm install --global @phreshos/cli" followed by "phresh system install." That command sets up PhreshOS as a background service, launches it, and provides a local web address, typically http://localhost:4300, where the first visit creates an owner account.

The project is built around a set of related repositories, including core contracts shared across the system, software development kits for client and server components, Node.js integration tools, React bindings, a component library, the phresh command-line tool, and the project's website and documentation. The source code itself is split into server, client, and shared components, and the project maintains standard development workflows for type-checking, building, and testing, including an automated check that packages a release, installs it in a temporary location, and confirms it boots correctly.

As with many Show HN submissions, the available material comes primarily from the project's own repository and documentation rather than independent reporting, so some claims about its capabilities and design should be verified directly against the source before being treated as fully established.
