A new browser-based project called Lofi Cities is offering a free, no-frills way to unwind: endless lofi music generated live alongside animated pixel-art cityscapes, as first spotted via a Hacker News "Show HN" post.
The web app lets users choose from a roster of virtual city nights, including Paris, Tokyo, New York, Hong Kong, Sydney and San Francisco. Each city is rendered as a 480x270 pixel-art animation that loops seamlessly every four minutes, complete with its own weather patterns, local landmarks and ambient city sounds. Layered on top is a continuous stream of lofi beats composed on the fly in the browser, rather than pulled from a fixed playlist.
The app requires no installation, no account creation and presents no pop-ups, according to its description. It runs on desktop, mobile and tablet browsers, positioning itself as a lightweight ambient companion for studying, working or simply relaxing.
One notable design touch: each city scene includes a billboard space intended for advertising. Until a business rents the spot, it displays a fictional, made-up local ad, with the site inviting real businesses to purchase the placement.
Details about the app's creator, technical underpinnings and the specifics of its music-generation system were not included in the material available at publication. As with many independently posted "Show HN" projects, further specifics — including who built it and how the live music composition works — have not been independently verified and would need confirmation directly from the developer before being reported as fact.
