More than a quarter of job postings on companies' own career pages have been sitting open for over 90 days, according to new data tracking listings across the web.

The analysis examined 607,050 postings pulled directly from employer career sites running on 15 different applicant tracking systems. Of those, 28.3% had been live for more than 90 days, and a notable subset — 94,106 postings — had remained open for more than six months.

The figures are based on publication dates supplied by employers themselves, which were available for 95% of the postings analyzed. Using that data, the median open job posting was found to be 36 days old, meaning half of all listings had been up for longer than a month.

The dataset also breaks listings down by job category, country, and applicant tracking system, and identifies which employers have the largest number of open postings, closures, and reposted listings.

The snapshot was computed on September 23, 2026, drawing on a sweep that began 29 days earlier, on August 24, 2026. Because closure figures depend on comparing postings across that roughly month-long window, the data's authors note that closure counts are bounded by that time frame and may not capture postings that closed and reopened, or closed just outside the tracking period.

The findings raise questions about why so many postings remain listed for extended periods — whether due to slow hiring processes, difficulty filling roles, or postings left active after a role has effectively closed. The underlying report does not draw firm conclusions on the cause, and the data is presented as a monthly measurement rather than a one-time study, suggesting trends will be tracked over time as the sweep is repeated.
